Tree preservation order for Milngavie town centre

We like Milngavie have requested that the following petition by the Community Council should be publicised:

Trees which contribute to the amenity of an area may be protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). Milngavie Community Council has raised a petition requesting that EDC place such an order on the area of trees south of Woodburn Way which surrounds the railway station, fish ladder and Tesco's Gavin's Mill site. Note that the trees on all sides of this area are already protected.

We Like Milngavie strongly supports this petition, since these trees contribute greatly to the attractiveness of our town and their loss would change the area completely. Full details are on the Community Council's website:

http://www.milngavie.org/petition/about.html

We hope that as many people as possible will sign the petition before it closes at the end of the month. Please help in one or more of the following ways:

1. Sign online - this is quick and easy - see web link above.

2. Email your contacts to do likewise.

3. Sign a paper copy in the village on Saturday, 27th April.

4. Print a paper copy of the petition from the weblink above and collect signatures from friends and neighbours - even a few will help! These may be handed in to the Information Centre in the village (next to the Fraser Centre) by 30 April.

Please do not sign both paper and online versions of the petition.

At present there is nothing to stop these trees being felled at any time - perhaps simply to make way for large advertisements. This has happened already at Kwik Fit!

Note also that Tesco's previous application would have resulted in the felling of about 150 mature trees. Yet despite numerous objections from the community, planning officers gave no consideration in their report to the impact this would have had on the town centre environment.
